Bridal Shower Games
Bridal showers are a time when the bride and her cherished ones should experience a whole gamut of emotions from sheer joy to reliving fond memories to interacting with friends and family and taking advantage of a rare opportunity of gently pulling each other's legs.
Smart bridal shower planning should take all of this into account and some more- Ensure that the bride has a blast with her close ones before taking the ultimate plunge! And what is the better way to have such a wonderful time, than including some incredible funny and cute games in the bridal shower?
There are three tones or ratings for bridal shower games- G rated (General and meant for the entire family), PG (games which may prove to be slightly risqu' for little children and older shower goers) and A (downright raunchy, adult-y games which would make the most unorthodox mother of the bride blush). Considering the sheer number of grandparents, mothers, mothers-in-law and tagalong tots attending these shower parties, it is best advised that the hosts stick to either G-rated or PG-rated games. If you are that enthusiastic about playing dirty (no pun intended), save it for later events like the bachelorette party. For the bridal shower, focus on not hurting anyone's sentiments as far as possible.
So what kind of games could prove to be fun, entertaining, and totally inoffensive at the same time? Plenty, it turns out! Here is a compilation of some of the most popular games divided into their respective categories
Introductory icebreaker games
You would have obviously invited guests for the shower ranging from every sphere of the bride's life. Not all of these people may have necessarily met each other before the bridal shower leading to a situation prone to folks sitting next to each other sharing lengths of uncomfortable silence. The surefire method to avoid this is to initiate the shower through icebreaker games meant to introduce people to one another and get them intermingling from the get go. Let's take a look already!
The Guess Who?/20 Questions Game
If you have watched the movie, 'Inglorious Bustards', you may already be familiar with this game (though we do hope for your sake that the outcome of the game turns out differently than it did for the players in the movie!)
-
Essentially, what you do is write down the name of a famous personality or a fictional character on a Post It! Note and stick it on the back, forehead, or headdress of the first guest who arrives at the shower (basically anyplace on the person's body not viewable to her or him)
-
Now ask that guest to write down a personality or character's name on the next note and let the person stick it on the next arriving guest without the latter knowing the name written on the note
-
Repeat this process with the second guest creating a "famous identity" for the third guest and so on and so forth till the second to last guest labels and sticks a note on the last arriving guest
-
Encourage the guests to correctly guess their identities by asking each other twenty questions regarding the character (all yes or no questions and each question should be posed to a different guest). A person is eliminated from the game if she or he is unable to correctly guess their identity within the twenty questions
- The winners are the people or person who has correctly guessed their identity within the least number of questions (the number of questions can be tracked by marking 20 ticks on each note. Circulate pens amongst the guests so that for each question asked to them, they may cross out a tick on the note of the person who posed the question to them. The winner(s) are the ones with the most uncrossed ticks on their notes)
Topics of discussion regarding the wedding is, what makes every bridal shower seem same old, same old. One way to bring a twist to the proceedings is by giving a "taboo token' which is nothing but a chess piece or a playing card (traditionally though it is a clothespin). On arrival, every guest is forbidden from mentioning terms like "wedding", "priest", "groom', and "groom's name" at the shower. The guests are encouraged to catch each other accidentally mentioning one of these taboo terms and confiscate their token from them. The collector of the maximum number of confiscated tokens wins.
The My Secret with the Bride Game
An icebreaker building upon the unique relationship each guest shares with the bride. On arrival, guests are encouraged to write down an experience or fact that only they know about the bride on tiny paper chits (request them to NOT write something scandalous which may not go down well in the presence of her mother-in-law to be). Later on, these chits are read out aloud and the guests are encouraged to guess whose 'secret with the bride' is being recited out. Person with the maximum number of correct guesses wins.
Can You Guess Your Future Hubby's Touch?/The Touch-A-Touch-A-Touch Me Game
Hey, the bride may never be allowed to so much as let a strange man touch her after the wedding without feeling just a tinge of guilt. This is the moment to make up for it! Blindfold the bride and make various young men caress her face. Slip in the groom amongst the "feelers". Can the bride guess her future life partner only from his touch? Variations include making the bride feel the hands or feet of the participants to pick out her groom from the bunch.
The Memento Maker Games
These bridal shower games focus on nostalgia and gathering future mementos for the bride, which she can look back upon fondly. The most enjoyable of this are
Mummifying the Mummies
Divide the guests into teams and assign them a mommy i.e. the mothers of the bride and groom and other guest moms. Give them rolls of bandage or toilet paper and have them wrap their respective mum as neatly as possible. Keep a timer of about 4-5 minutes. The teams are allowed to add ornaments to decorate their "mummy". The team with the snazziest mummy wins! Guarantee inter-generational hilarity and cute photos to last for life.
Portrait of a Future Bride Blindfold the guests and ask them to draw the bride as they imagine her on her wedding day. Make them write down their names on the underside of their paper. Let the bride be the judge of who best foresaw her (don't let her turnover the drawings before her decision). The drawings make for great mementos.
Of course, you could also always toss in wedding themed variations of classics like Passing the Bouquet, Musical Chairs and Chinese Whispers.
Bridal Shower Game Prizes
Bridal shower game prizes may range from scented candles, lotions, perfumes, purses, soaps to movie tickets, fancy cell phone covers and address books.
